As Gary Neville mentioned recently the long awaited start of the Salford City FC academy is finally looking to take shape for the coming season which will finally shut up a lot of the critics of our club who have taken great delight in criticising us for trying to buy success as opposed to developing it. This latest development again shows the commitment of our owners in nurturing youthful talent with view to developing home grown young players for future inclusion in the first team. www.pitchero.com/clubs/salfordcityfc/news/salford-city-academy-opportunities-for-supporters--1847730.html

I suppose an academy will still need to cast the net wide to get talent in.

No harm in doing both. If we can get the best players we should, whilst developing local Salford talent as well. There should be no limits to ambition!

What league will they be playing in, details of the Academy still seem a little vague!

my lad used to play for salford school boys which is basically the best school boys in salford who Ryan Giggs played for and i know they now have a connection with salford as the managers help out on match days so this would be a good oppurtunity for them when they finish with salford school boys at 16 they then go into the salford academy or at least have a trial. you know then you are getting the best local lads that are not currently with bigger clubs

im sure which league they play in will depend as it goes on a point system a bit like the stadium grading. it depends how many hours a week they train the coaches qualifications and the facilities. you have the prem academies in one league but then you have the likes of Rochdale Bury Preston etc in another league

I'm 4 years younger than Giggsy (or Ryan Wilson as he was then!) and played for Salford Boys. IIRC, about 80% of our team was linked to a pro club at the age of 15 so there would be lads worth a trial at least. Any of the lads linked to pro clubs should also be kept on a database and monitored as the vast majority will be let go at 16 and will need a club. If you can bring through just a couple of those into the 1st team then it would be great to see.

So for me far from the BEST kids in salford and thats speaking from experiance coaching in greater manchester, basically what im saying is its lazy scouting to assume the lads in the school boys teams are the "Best" of lads not currently at clubs. Salford shoukd have scouts in and around greater manchester and not just relying on prem club cast offs just go down albert park everyday and you will see some real tallent and 9 times out of 10 are not involved in any organised teams be it school or junior club level.

Not sure what you're saying here Broughton. To play for Salford Boys you always had to attend trials and 9 times out of 10 the best lads at those trials were picked in the squad (I'm sure there's the odd exception and we had a lad who was picked purely on the basis he was absolutely rapid!). Most of those lads were also connected to pro clubs (not just Prem as some at Preston, Oldham and Crewe in my age group) and they played for both. It was school game Wed/Thu night, Salford Boys Sat morning and Pro club Sun morning back in my day (almost 25 years ago). Maybe that's changed now but if you're implying bias is used based on a teacher of a certain school picking his favourites then I certainly didn't encounter it. And I'm sure there are plenty of decent young kids playing football in the park but if they aren't good enough for a school team they ain't gonna become a semi-pro/pro footballer when they turn 16!

If your school doesnt have a decent footy team then lads dont beother playing for the school so miss out so never get seen for the county teams and other whe go to the trials pass em so leave their junior sat teams and join a squad of 20 lads for each game so dont bother going again and you will find the prem clubs tend to lean on the parents to keep the lads from playing for their county against the rules obs but happens. My point was that you shouldnt assume the best players in the county are involved with the schools team. And to dismiss lads in the park again on the assumption that they musnt be good enough is again short sighted you had the likes of angel gomez plying his skills dow albert park (Broughton) before joining Barrhill. Ive picked seen lads and got em playing for my teams again from albert oark their english wasnt great and cinfidence pretty low amongst their peers so wouldnt dream of trialing for the schools teams 3 of those lads are now at Bolton x2 and one at City. So basically scouts need to get off their ass and watch kids playing for teams down places like dutchy and local parks like albert. And to say somebody if not picked up come the age of 16 aint gonna make it sums up tje state of scouting and talent spotting. On that logic Smalling and vardy shouldnt be good enough for the prem as they werent involved with a prem academy at 16yo. Lazy scouting and old school logic creates large holes in nets for talented kids to fall through. Throw open trials for kids start soccer schools in the summer months similar to the cliff and you see the true talent of salford 😎 its all about opionions roll on july 11th 🤘

i understand what your saying about kids not being at teams and being good enough because like you i have seen it myself as my lad played for the school team with Angel Gomes and was at an academy himself when playing for salford boys so salford definitely need to get out and scout the local youth teams. but if were purely talking about the connection they have with salford school boys they cant do this as the school boys coaches dont go out scouting as for starters the child has to go to school in salford, the pe teacher puts as many boys forward as he wants then they go to a trial and a 22 man squad is picked so its rare but not impossible though for someone to slip through the net. what im trying to say is salford has got a great opportunity with the school boys and they should be of a really good standard but this shouldnt be their only option like you said they should be out scouting on saturdays

Firstly, you've gone from talking about Salford Boys to "playing for their county"which are 2 different things. County would be Greater Manchester Boys and Salford would be their town team. Secondly, if you read my post again, I say that if a lad isn't good enough to be playing for their school team at 16 then they won't be good enough to turn pro, not if they haven't already been picked up by a club. The 2 things are worlds apart. One thing I will agree with you on is some of the immigrant lads who play in local parks etc. You'd hope that schools actively encourage these kids to participate in school sports as there are undoubtedly some talented kids out there. Unfortunately, from a scouting perspective there are only so many days in the week where a scout can look for players so logic says that the vast majority of these kids will be playing for their schools, Saturday/Sunday teams or town teams (Salford, Manchester, Tameside etc) so that is where the scout turns up to watch. It's virtually impossible to get down to every local recreation ground in the hope there's an unearthed gem playing Wembley Pairs with his mates!😉

Oops yeah my bad, it's a city, but most of the other local boys teams (Oldham, Stockport, Bury, Trafford, Rochdale etc), are town teams and I was generalising.😉
