So here it is. Our final and 46th league game of season 2023-24 against our old adversaries Harrogate Town. It'll be interesting to see in due course over the next couple of months as to who will have actually made their final appearance in a Salford City shirt. I'm not going to speculate at this moment in time but just hope that we finish this season off in some style against a side who we have had an excellent record over since our initial meetings in the National League North having only lost our first ever league encounter against them as recently as September last year. Saturdays win at Newport County thankfully brought an end to our four game losing streak while Harrogate were involved in an eight goal thriller at home to MK Dons with the visitors scoring five of them! It's been a decent if at times inconsistent season for the North Yorkshire team who have enjoyed one of their better EFL campaigns and who presently sit just six points outside of the top seven having looked for some time as serious contenders for a play off place. All in all it's been an 'interesting' season for us and the hope is that KR is given the freedom to bring in the players he wants and believes will take us to the next level as well as obviously seeing a massive improvement in our by and large miserable home record since our elevation to the EFL. Yeah, as you touch upon TD, our home record really is miserable. I hadn't realised 'til now that out of twenty-two league home games this season we'd won ONLY FIVE! Our home record puts us on a par with Forest Green (relegated) and Sutton (probably gonna be relegated).
Surely we must be deserving of a towering SIXTH HOME WIN on our final Saturday.

Thankfully my 3yr olds birthday party clashes thus saving me having to witness any more of our dismal home form this season!

I am looking forward to consigning this season to the dustbin if nothing else. A win would be nice but I'm not holding out any hope. I am more interested now in what happens in the close season signings and outgoings wise. Just an enjoyable game tomorrow with a goal or two and some decent football would be lovely thanks
On the subject of our home form maybe the key is to play behind closed doors! In the Covid season 20/21 with no crowds we had the joint best home record in L2 with 11W 11D and 1L. Contrast with 21/22 when we were 9th, 22/23 14th and our current miserable 22nd from 23.

There's times at ML it is still like playing behind closed doors 🤦♂️🤣

Well that was the season in a nutshell. Some good football first half, a cracking goal and abysmal defending including an injury time equaliser. Then completely ineffective 2nd half and could easily have lost but for a couple of good saves and some poor finishing.
Matt Smith's send off was emotional, he's been great for us particularly this season where he was the main reason we didn't get relegated. Thank God we've a few months off now, the released and retained list should be interesting

I wasn't there today but have just seen the brief highlights. It looks like we have to be thankful to Alex Cairns for holding onto a share of the points but 5 home wins in 23 home league fixtures highlights one of a number of issues that need to be resolved next season. Anyone else think that we've seen Matt Smith's final appearance in a Salford City shirt given the way he left the field of play?

And he walks away with both players' Player and Supoorters Player Award. A class act that lad.

Spoken to a Salford fan since and the rumour is that he's retiring. Not a bad way to finish your career but how good would it have been if he could have gone out with a goal?

I’ve loved Smudge’s time at Salford. I know opinions are subjective, but those who say we hoof it when he’s on, so dropping him allows us to play the ball on the deck…..that didn’t go too well did it?
Matt scored an absolute shed full of goals in a very poor team, whilst being physically assaulted most games. It’s a mark of the mans character that he refuses to take an ounce of credit, saying it’s all down to those around him.
I know he has an investment business on the go and maybe doesn’t need the money, but I’d love to have seen him stay for one more season, if only to instill his work ethic into our younger players. But those of us of a certain age know that the older you get, the harder it is and injuries take longer to heal.
For me, as much of a legend as anyone at Salford. I’ll miss him and I wish him all the very best for the future.
