I've never heard so many excuses from an opposition supporter as the one featured here. The pitch while not perfect is nowhere near as bad as he's making out and he should consider himself lucky we're not playing on pitches from the 60's and 70's. Now those were virtually grassless at times and complete mud baths. And that was at the highest level! Pretty sure if they'd won there'd have been no mention of the playing surface. Also, all our goals were apparently preventable. I suppose every goal that is ever scored is preventable but taking that aside all three were top finishes unlike their stuffy deflected own goal which I presume was a well rehearsed move!

Wow that's a full range of excuses, all that was missing was the referee! I'd be more concerned at having 1 shot at goal all game and barely getting out of their own half. Perish the thought you admit you just got beaten by the better team on the day.

'I'm not making excuses' - proceeds to reel off a load of excuses.

Enjoyed the tactics pod Danny - Ironically Dave Salmon is a bit of a salty sort isn’t he?
From a far I was surprised by the switch in team shape for Sunday, but from what I have seen and read it appeared to give us a level of fluency I think many expected going into the season. To my mind the main protagonists who have allowed us to play our most ball centric and front footed football at times this season have been Elliot Watt, Ryan Watson - and what may be surprising to some Curtis Tilt.
Having McLennan and Chester’s high and wide in combination with a back three does seem to remove a level of anxiety in Watson and Watt’s ability to play more progressive balls per 90”, to me it seems in part down to our rest defence being more secure against the oppositions counter. The 3-2 or 3-3 base of the formation allows hitting a relief ball into wide areas or over the top significantly easier for Watt or even Cains if the ball is recycled back to the keeper. Lund as an extra body plus Hendry coming short creates a natural box or diamond in the middle to punch the ball into Watson and Watt to play the quarterback balls over the top. I have mentioned a few times over the season that in terms of shape the 3-3-4 we used when in possession against Doncaster away provided the most control and comfort defensively and in attack I have seen this season. The evident increase in possession, chances created and Xg Sunday reiterates that when our midfield two can get on the ball comfortably we can play with a high level of attacking intent and ball security.
Karl Robinson’s most effective tweak vs. Neil Wood is in the territorial battle, moving the back line forward ten yards has pushed our strikers closer to the opposition back line and created space behind our defence, Which brings me to Curtis Tilt. For me, Tilt has been very good since KRs arrival and is my player of the second half of the season. With Garbutt to his left and the extra space behind him being higher up the pitch affords him he has more options mitigating pressure. The extra passing option to Garbutt or Watt has helped him massively, and I think both he and Vassell are forming a genuine partnership despite early in the season the pair seeming more focussed on arguing amongst themselves than actually trying to play a game of football. Tilt’s always winning 80 -90% every week of his aerial duels and of late his pass completion is on average way in excess of 75%. That in a side that has been very direct to a target man in Smith. His goals in the last two have as much shown his aerial prowess as the quality of the assists created by Smith and Garbutt respectively. Both goals he has had to show a level of guts and drive that beyond Smith we have lacked in the box from set plays. I like his aggression and physicality when coupled with his ability to start and maintain build up, appreciate he isn’t everyones cup of tea - but for me he is becoming one of the better CBs we have had in the recent past comparable to Theo, Jordan Turnbull or Corrie Ndaba.
Understandably you can sense after this week the support is starting to look beyond and onto next season. I mentioned in the game thread that I think two wins and 50 points retains our L2 status - which I hope to see happening over the Easter weekend. There is a lot of upside in the shape KR went with Sunday and how this might look with our more established players in some of those positions. You could call McLennan and Chesters split strikers or very wide Inside Forwards Sunday, which allowed Morton to be freed off to occupy the opposition CBs looking for the through ball and to use his pace to stretch teams. With that in mind you could see Luamba in for Chester’s on the right, N’Mai or Garbutt for McLennan on the left, Luamba, Smith or McAleny for Morton, Liam Shep or Ingram for Mariappa. Its a shame the Ossama Ashley of 12 months ago isn’t available or even a Stevie Mallan because I think a more solid midfield three would have removed a lot of pressure from this team especially in the half spaces and could’ve gotten more out of Luke Bolton running the line in attack earlier in the year.
Collectively I do think we will see a lot of if, buts and maybe’s as a fan base when we look back on this season. Some might even call it a wasted 12 months, but removing Wood was the right thing to do and with KR and a more offensive set up like Sunday I think we can be looking at the playoffs again next season.

So much to say about the tactics stuff but I’d love to get you on the pod for an episode je85 so we can really get stuck into the detail.
Many thanks everyone for all the comments about the chat with Dave. I normally do the opposition fan interview the day after the game but I think the disappointment of the loss showed a bit in my chat with Dave which was only an hour or so after the game finished. I might try the same in future to see if I get more of a raw take from my guests. It’s all a learning experience at this point for me, and one I’m absolutely loving. Massive thanks to everyone who’s tuning into the pod. It means the world to me
