The gospel according to Saint Gary….
You MUST have a Sporting Director. The SD MUST have the final say on players. A manager lasts 2 years at most, but the SD is looking to build a team in the long term…whereas the manager might choose a player for his short-term needs. If he fails, then he should be held to account….but he must be given time. The owner, SD and manager/coach should have a veto on any player coming in….but then they shouldn’t.
Does anyone, like me wonder what planet he’s on because hardly anything he said gels with how it’s done at Salford. At what point does our SD get sacked for continual non-performance? Has he not yet had enough time?

You don't have to convince me. I've been saying Casper out for 2 years.
As for Gary he's a politician and is not interested in truths. He'll say anything if he feels it will gain him the most favour on the day.

I wonder whether Karl Robinson examined the back of his contract when he signed up for the job as I'm certain it will say all this - and more besides - in ultra microscopic, naked to the human eye print!

Who are the most successful managers in England currently? Pep and Klopp. Both have been at their clubs for several years and each one has a distinct playing style. Can anyone say what ours is? Also I do believe our current "head coach" spent about 5 or 6 years in his last 2 jobs. Makes you think Gary might be talking bollocks.

Also I do believe our current "head coach" spent about 5 or 6 years in his last 2 jobs. Makes you think Gary might be talking bollocks. I mentioned above that Gary said those key people should ALL have a veto on a player joining. But some argue that no manager should have to take a player he doesn’t want. THEN…..He backtracks and says a manager shouldn’t be able to veto a player the owner and the SD want. I had backtracked on my criticism of Caspar, because I ultimately believe that he was just doing the owners bidding. But according to this, the whole and final responsibility lies with the SD. Since ours is still in place, we must assume that the owners think he’s doing a great job and the fault is that successive managers and coaches have not been good enough to get the best out of them. But THEY picked the coaches. As for the players we bring in (non-loans), I break them down in my head as such: Older players who’ve done reasonably well in higher leagues, but are being let go. Experienced players who can be pretty good, but are prone to injury. We get them for a bargain price and hope to keep them fit. Younger players not quite at the level we need, but who can be developed. Clearly BTA was such a player and N’Mai could be. But who else? I think it was Giggs that said they wanted a striker but they see Salford coming and want big money. That may have been the case, but I doubt it is any longer. Wrexham are linked with a striker who will cost the ‘seven figures’. That’s the cost of getting that star striker. I would love to be a fly on the wall at the meetings where they discuss the players they need and the targets they chase. I think this makes pretty depressing watching, because it makes clear nothing will change at Salford. GNs belief and determination that this is right looks to be unshakeable.

I agree with most of what has been written above.
I have no problem with the Sporting Director concept but they have to be (I) accountable and (II) be able to communicate.
If we take the first part, accountability, I don’t sense the accountability with the series of on field performance issues. Now maybe things are said or done behind closed doors, but, as I’ve written on other threads, Casper does seem to live a charmed life. The second part, communication. Content, frequency and medium are crucial, the SD has to communicate to the fanbase but on a less frequent basis than the manager/ coach. Again, we don’t see this at Salford. I believe the Co92 made an error appointing friends to key positions and should have gone for the best person they could get (within budget) with a similar philosophy.
I hope there is a bit of a reset in the summer with Nicky Butt. By all accounts Butt did a good job with the MUFC academy, let’s hope he can get his hands around this challenge. It’s always an odd feeling criticising the Co92 after their significant investment but I guess nobody is beyond a bit of constructive evaluation!!!

Someone mentioned to me that Casper had taken a step back from sporting director and taken charge of one of the young age group teams (u18s or something).... Not sure how true that is, but certainly warranted based on his performances since taking over in 2017
