Gary Neville last night said the squad had been pared down to 17! So it was more or less last night's line up, as opposed to last season's Noah Ark squad where we had two of everything! This is how they have got around the salary cap. Doesn't bode well with injuries however. I did see the Development squad played two game on Tuesday which is going some. Not sure how the Dev squad works, do they get paid? Are they on contracts? They seem to be using it like some kind of gold panning exercise, sieving through dozens of players to find one discarded by bigger clubs.

I’ve thought for a while our squad is very thin, 2 or 3 bad injuries and we are into the development squad for players. Looking at their results so far which have mostly been defeats I’m not convinced it is a viable option quality wise. In a condensed season with 2 games most weeks the squad is going to be knackered by March if we don’t beef it up a bit. The other thing is it is very unbalanced. 2 full backs and 6 forwards seems very odd.
Listening to Chris Casper the club has given up on the U18 academy as they can’t compete with Utd and City for local talent. The Dev squad strategy is to pick up young players who’ve slipped through the net at other clubs and see if they can make it with us. They will be on contracts I’m sure but as strategies go it seems very scattergun and miles away from the original ethos of developing local youngsters. Time will tell of course but I think the thin squad and low quality back ups will bite us on the proverbial bum at some point.

Yeah I was wondering to what extent, if at all, the new £1.5m League 2 'salary cap' would impact Salford City FC. Does anyone have any idea - even ballpark figure - how much our players cost the club? In the past Salford have pretty much (I assume) been able to outbid other clubs to sign any player that they fancied. Whereas will the new club finances rules restrict Gary Neville's (he argued against the cap!) ambitions? I've no idea what it costs to run a League 2 football club, so would like to know whether setting a salary cap (and that also includes some other running costs apparently) at £1.5m will cause most aspirational league 2 clubs to have to rethink their business plans, and hire 'lesser quality-' or simply less players; or whether setting a limit at £1.5m is largely an irrelevance - as no league 2 clubs currently spend that much anyway? Enlighten me please, someone...
