Now that was more like the Salford City of 'old' today. An excellent 2-0 win considering we played the whole of the second half with 10 men following Danny Webber's sending off in the final minutes of the first half.
We started like a house on fire, great movement, incisive passes and a willingness to get involved in all areas of the park and might well have been 3-0 up in the opening fifteen minutes with Jamie Rother crashing a thunderous shot against the post in the opening two minutes. Lancaster made little headway against a resolute Salford defence although on a couple of occasions they came close only to be denied by excellent last ditch tackles.
Martyn Andrews fitted seamlessly into the side and looked like he'd never been away and it was a fully deserved lead on 35minutes when Gareth Seddon beat the offside trap and his marker to expertly slot a low angled drive off the inside of the post. Just minutes from the half-time whistle Danny Webber - who up to that time had put in an excellent workmanlike stint - was controversially dismissed for supposedly motioning with his head towards Lancaster's full-back who apparantly had had a go at him off the ball. At least that's the version I heard but I'd be delighted to be told otherwise by anyone who might have been close to the incident.
With us down to 10 men Lancaster tried to stretch the play but within eight minutes of the re-start the game was effectively over as a superb switch of play from one side of the field ended with Seddon meeting a weighted Rother cross with deadly accuracy into the roof of the net. The referee continued to issue cards out left and center with Lancaster winning the battle for most of them and even when the host side looked dangerous Sam Guthrie was equal to anything thrown at him with one particular save seeing him spectacularly fling himself the goal to parry away a certain a goal bound effort, which if it had gone in would have been a travesty for a hard working and well marshalled Salford defence.
An encouraging return to form on the strength of what we saw today but there will be tougher opponents than Lancaster City coming up. Nevertheless every aspect of our play suggested that the 'hoofball' of recent weeks has been abandoned in favour of a more controlled passing game. Every player pulled their weight today and looked like a team playing for each other and not like a bunch of individuals. I can't wait for the Warrington game now!
Team: Guthrie, Edgehill (Coo) Neville, Andrews, Lynch, Walters, Dunn, Rother (Moss), Webber, Seddon, Madeley (Platt).
Subs: D. Chadwick, Cook (GK) - Not Used
