What a cracking night for just £5.00watching the Ammies beat Hyde United 3-1 in a penalty shoot out after the game had finished level at 3-3 after 90 minutes. Hero of the night was undoubtedly keeper Tom Russell - the grandson of President Dave Russell - who at just under 17 years of age saved three Hyde penalty kicks with the Ammies converting all their three attempts to progress into the semi-finals of the Manchester FA Premier Cup in thrilling fashion in front of 289 spectators with a very healthy and vociferous contingent of Salford fans in evidence throughout the game.
Having trailed 1-0 and then 3-1 at the break, Matty Warburton scored the only Salford goal of the 1st half which saw the home side successfully covert two headers and then capitalise on a defensive slip to look comfortable at the break. The second half saw a complete transformation with the Ammies quickly reducing the arrears on 52 minutes with Warburton firing home his second of the night. It was then virtually one way traffic for the remainder of the game with the Ammies creating numerous chances and getting closer and closer until an excellent run from Michael Nottingham saw him cross over from an almost hopeless position with substitute Jordan Hulme getting the decisive touch ahead of the opposing keeper and a fellow defender to send the Salford fans into raptures of joy. It was the least we deserved for our virtual total dominance of the second half and for Tom Russell - a virtual spectator for most of it - it was somewhat ironic that he duly belied his tender years by producing three top drawer penalty shoot out saves as the Salford fans roared his name in appreciation with him eventually being hoisted shoulder high on a fellow team mate as he deservedly lapped up the adulation from the Ammie's fans assembled behind the goal where the drama had unfolded.
I don't think I've ever experienced an atmosphere like that for a Manchester FA Premier Cup game before and it's probably unlikely that we'll see a conclusion to a game in similar circumstances for a long time to come. I just can't wait to see the highlights and hope that young Tom is given maximum exposure for his heroics. Well done mate!
