I still find it somewhat surreal that it's only just three seasons ago that we were a mid table Evo-Stik Divison One North mid table side attracting just over 100 spectators to home games and here we are now winning at Altrincham - who were then three divisions higher than us at the start of season 2013/4 - with a traveling support of 414 fans!
While the win against the division's basement side was expected based on league positions we all know from previous experience that it hasn't always worked out that way but credit to the lads as they put a decent shift in, created a host of chances - and like Barwell at home last season someone is going to be on the end of a good hiding soon - and then maintained a third clean sheet by repelling the best Altrincham could throw at us.
Loanee Nick Haughton clearly caught the eye in the 1st half and up until his substitution on the hour with his mazey type runs into the opposition area and might well have ended up with a hat-trick with more controlled finishing. A typically cracking finish from Mike Phenix just before the break who had frustrated me up to that point who is much better served by concentrating on winning the ball and going direct on goal as opposed to wrestling with opposing players and looking for imaginary free kicks.
With loan players Patrick Brough, Jack Deaman and Nick Haughton all in the starting line up and with Chris Atkinson coming on as substitute two thirds into the game it does make we wonder whether we are seeing another transformation of playing personnel with some of the more established names not figuring in recent outings. Whether this is down to injuries or not an update on a number of players would be particularly useful to establish where we're at regarding player availability and whether there is the possibility of any of the loan signings being changed into permanent ones.
Really enjoyed yesterday afternoon and even the absence of a roof and the ability to have a drink inside the Altrincham's ground - although annoying -didn't put a dampener on the proceedings having enjoyed a couple of pints in the St. George just up the road prior to the game! Roll on Tuesday night and Hyde United.
