Listening to GB’s comments after the game yesterday I don’t think there has been a conversation about his position… yet.
I feel like it’s a perfect storm to change the manager for the owners. GB has contended with injuries all year and has never had a settled XI or a system that maximise the things they are good at. Jason Lowe at RB has effectively been a deep play maker in a wide area which has been effective for this forward line, BTA Smith combination has developed and I think Ryan Watson has played better here than at Tranmere.
That said GB does himself no favours with game management, if you look at the performances from Hartlepool away to the end of the season the defeats and draws felt self inflicted - it was a perfect microcosm of the whole season. This was most amplified by the Bristol away and Barrow draw on Easter weekend.
An overhaul is happening on the playing side due to contract expires and loan players going back - Corrie and Ste Kelly will be difficult to replace in my opinion. I would expect interest in one or two from the teams going up and further beyond also.
On balance I think GB should get to work his final year of the contract but he needs to be encouraged to take the handbrake off. I would back him to take a bigger say on recruitment because he clearly is able to get the squad gelled together. Next year it will need to be quicker because we can’t have months in the bottom half from the get go.

We need a good start. There will be ups and downs, but we had too much ground to make up. We need to have enough points on the board to weather any drop in form. In the last 30 games (before Saturday), we were 4th or 5th in the form table. Those first 15 games are what effectively ended our challenge.

So it was the poor start that did us, agreed. But with seven games to go we had it in our own hands, how many points did we get from those seven games....EIGHT. If GB gets sacked it will be the run in that did for him.

If GB gets sacked it will be the run in that did for him. How many did FGR drop? What about Port Vale, who only made it through on the last day. Then there’s the rest. This is a tough league and all the top teams dropped points they should have taken. Most of them could afford to drop a couple here and there, but we couldn’t. Port Vale probably has their best game of the season against us. We’re fooling ourselves if we think we’re going to get a manager that will sail through and not drop points we should have taken. But time will tell. We can debate it all we like, but th owners will do what they want to do, and they’ll keep meddling in squad selection because they believe in it. It’s a recipe for disaster and it’s unsustainable to keep trying to buy our way up the leagues. Sack GB and there’s another chunk of money going out to pay his wages for the next year. It’s gone beyond ridiculous now. If we sack another manager it will be a like a rich guy has bought his son (little Gary) a football club to play with. We’ll deserve every criticism that comes our way.

I can’t get over how much is being put on GB and not Casper or Greg Strong in all this on the recruitment side. I worry we will be linked with the same names as back in Jan all over again - Josh McPake springs to mind with his contract being terminated by Rangers and that’s not the kind of signing that going to move the group forward in my opinion.
The elephant in the room for whoever is the manager going into the summer will be they are recruiting in the same spots as Wrexham and Stockport who will spend. I think the crypto mob at Crawley will spend to keep the fans on side post Yems being outed as massive racist. There is a lot of experience coming down and Wimbledon have always had good loan players come in - so the ball is very much with the powers at be that they can provide for the manager… right now I am not sure.

There's the problem in a nutshell. We look almost exclusively at out of contract players to come in on a free, the clubs you mentioned will probably spend actual money in transfer fees for the players they want. To my mind that means we get more of the same, either sicknotes like Willock, Morris and McAleny who were binned by their previous club or players who aren’t any better than the ones we let go. For example I'm sure Hunter will leave this summer but is McPake really an upgrade? He did nowt at Tranmere or his previous loan clubs. I'd defy any manager to get promoted with the ragbag GB has had to work with.

It’s going to be a funny one this summer because I think some clubs will have overstretched a limited budget post the covid years this season and will need a bit of stimulus financially. You’d imagine there will be some contracts just not being picked up - now I do think there will be some quality in there absolutely. But again it’s on Casper and the board to recruit better. If they go to the ‘spend our way out of it’ mentality I think they could take some of the better players in this league to Moor Lane. Keillor-Dunn at Oldham? Too good for National League but would he do it in L1… Telford is rumoured to be looking out of Newport but has a year left so would cost money… point is there are options out there. I have been on and off here today and reading various comments and the match report on BBC from yesterdays game I can’t stop think the focus now needs to be better players not a new manager.
